Sradiphath shifted in the Sylian, wings rustling as she adjusted herself. Her belly was swollen with eggs, and it wasn't comfortable to lie on it for any length of time (besides that, she didn't want to squish the babies inside). She lay on her side now, opening her eyes to stare at the beach and snort softly. Inconvenient it was, bearing a clutch around with you, but she also liked it. She was proving that she was indeed a queen; that she could bear eggs and that she was worthy of the deference accorded her. She looked at the sands.
Digging out a broad hollow for her clutch, the silver smoothed down the edges, lovingly preparing it for her children. Nudging down a few lumps, she at last decided it was ready, and the real work began.
It took some time, but at last all of the eggs were laid. Pleased that no one else happened to be on the sands with her, Sradiphath arranged them and rearranged them, angling them and setting them up in just the way she wanted. At last she was finished, and she glanced back, flaring her wings jealously to hide the clutch from anyone who might dare to sneak in. With no rider, she had no need to crouch really low over the eggs, but she did it anyway. She'd done well, she thought, especially for her first clutch, and her only clutch. Yes, she was a silver, and unbonded. Usually, once a Silver lays their eggs, they die after they hatch. Her time was coming...
There were twenty-two eggs there in front of her, all nestled into the sand and lovingly surrounded with the warm stuff. Although there was no queen egg (which was bound to bother someone), there were a number of promising, big eggs. Largest of all was a lime green egg, fading to a lighter shade on the bottom. It was faintly shiny - an interesting thing for a non-queen egg. Next to it, in the back row of eggs, lay a light blue one, all slashed across with darker blue and dotted with black. Sradiphath favoured both of these; she settled on her side next to her clutch and, though she extended a broad wing over all of her eggs, she protected the two biggest eggs with neck and shoulder, keeping them safe and warm with her own hide.
There were a number of red eggs, a development that the silver found moderately interesting. Mostly she was just proud of the size of her eggs - most were large and medium-sized, except for a few smaller ones. Among these latter eggs were two particularly tiny eggs - a black one with a green patch and gold speckles on top, and a jet-black one right at the front of the clutch. These two were tiny, but the silver queen loved them all the same. The entire group was protected by gigantic wings, stretched over them to conceal the eggs from any viewers but herself. She wasn't going to share. The eggs were hers - hers until hatching day. Only Jeseth would be allowed to see (and maybe not even him) until then. At least until the eggs were good and hard, and no longer vulnerable.
Until then, she would stay on the sands and protect her babies, jealously and fiercely.
